Bags and pouches are two of my favorite things to stitch 💗 I love pairing modern fabrics, with metal zippers, and bits of leather. These personal touches make each unique, stylish and give a polished finish. These particular pouches are crafted from <a href="https://cottonandflax.com/" target="_blank">Erin Dollar's</a> Arroyo collection for Robert Kaufman. The minimalist designs are printed on Essex Yarn Dye fabrics which have an amazing hand and are lovely to work with. The Petal Pouch pattern is from Anna Graham of <a href="https://noodle-head.com/" target="_blank">Noodlehead</a> fame. Her recently published booklet Everyday Essentials includes the Petal Pouch, as well as the Wool + Wax Tote and the Minimalist Wallet. In a weekend, or a Saturday (for the extreme sewist) a complete ensemble can be stitched up!<br />

October! What happened! Where did the time go? There are apples on my trees! This summer went by much to quickly. Over the course of the last year, I had been considering returning to work; but was on the fence as in what capacity. I had worked in education for years, administratively; and then as a teacher. I knew if I chose teaching I'd have papers to grade every night, 5 classes, 40 papers each. . . 200 math assignments nightly. . .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiCUZEASB-Pc1t7kDT_qktkRmSDhip1UWxNWA3jiRq61BwjLJ-WLYLN7h0Ckg4svJUyHgkjt-Lr2rKWG-kn14C_rbrmZaPRpdZzb0iEPdKr3JV0qVRMYWMXIMgkGzllBZzvkyG5KGlCCwW/s1600/Yolo+Hall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiCUZEASB-Pc1t7kDT_qktkRmSDhip1UWxNWA3jiRq61BwjLJ-WLYLN7h0Ckg4svJUyHgkjt-Lr2rKWG-kn14C_rbrmZaPRpdZzb0iEPdKr3JV0qVRMYWMXIMgkGzllBZzvkyG5KGlCCwW/s320/Yolo+Hall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
My decision was administrative. With the onset of Autumn, I accepted a position at Cal State, Chico. This is Yolo Hall, home of Kinesiology, Physical Education and Movement Studies. I work with some amazing individuals and have a great office with a view overlooking a huge grassy quad.<br />

Its definitely been a bittersweet experience. I didn't realize how much I'd miss the "mom" routine. . . driving field trips, volunteering in the classroom, attending volleyball practice, chairing school committees etc., but, I do and admittedly, shed my share of tears over the decision.<span id="goog_835007512"></span><br />

I've been sewing intermittently; mostly, buying yummy fabrics to stash away for a yet undetermined project. I love the new Robert Kaufman Yarn Dye colors paired with cottons. Here are red, olive and steel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCggG79I5O4GVFN__CHAJ87REymdBDLpqSIge1JlyMu5W5PtWtAyGL9bbXw28NJyh1tx7MPqy5QfJup_WtqNoy8zl_lEb6PFM_B_Q3ja1zz2Ts6iF1UcV0WINp3uCVv0w93yLd0Gg7IN4h/s1600/Purple+Pull.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCggG79I5O4GVFN__CHAJ87REymdBDLpqSIge1JlyMu5W5PtWtAyGL9bbXw28NJyh1tx7MPqy5QfJup_WtqNoy8zl_lEb6PFM_B_Q3ja1zz2Ts6iF1UcV0WINp3uCVv0w93yLd0Gg7IN4h/s320/Purple+Pull.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Purples have struck my fancy. At Portland Quilt Market in May, purple was everywhere. . . maybe it's a sign to come of next year's Pantone color. It sings when paired with text prints, indigo and linen.<br />

Low volume is super trendy right now. I'm generally drawn to cloth with texture–linens, silks, cross weaves–but these barely there prints are so versatile; speaking both to tradition and the modern.<br />

I have enjoyed the Modern Maverick's Bee I'm apart of. Super fun and great block choices! I love the idea of blocks coming together from across the globe being stitched together into a quilt.<br />

I'm really feeling the need to delve into holiday gift-making. But I'm just not quite there yet. The days here in Northern Cal are still warm, 80°. Kids are still in shorts and t-shirts. And given I'm so smitten with the Robert Kaufman plaids, I made some board shorts for Colby. Interesting fact, Vans™ has purchased these RK fabrics for their clothing line. Colb just has the homemade preview version. And he loves them! Creating with fabric brings such joy. . .I'm off to sneak in a little Saturday stitching before the crew awakens!<br />

The Pantone color for 2013 is Emerald Green. I love greens, but very rarely choose this particular shade when I sew. The challenge calls for Emerald Green, a background fabric and one additional color~for me that was yellow! <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/" target="_blank"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Hawthorne Threads</span></b></a> has a great bundle specifically designed to celebrate Emerald Green, I ordered it, paired it with the yellow dot floral from Bari J's Lilly Belle collection and Robert Kaufman's Essex Yarn Dye in Black.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to make a small quilt, 36" x 48" with the Flying Dutchman block. Very scrappy. I've used the <a href="http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponline/rulers_display.asp?i=707" target="_blank"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Quilt In A Day Ruler</span></b></a> before, but it had been along time since it'd been out of the ruler drawer. A quick refresher, and one miss-cut block later, I was using it like a pro. BUT, the ruler requires you cut along all 4 sides without shifting the block. I tried this with a conventional mat and it was awkward. Sooooo, I gathered up a 40% coupon for JoAnn's and purchased one of the 360° rotary mats. A quilty friend had mentioned how much she had loved hers and I thought it would be perfect for this project. And it is! Best. Mat. Ever. The mat rotates similar to a lazy susan and made cutting these blocks fast, fast, fast! The mat is a 12" square so it's a perfect size for toting along to sew days, also.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The geese stitched off perfectly. I did make a modification to the instructions for the ruler, I pressed the seams open versus pressing to the darker fabric as instructed. The blocks lay much nicer, and the seams are more evenly distributed across the block. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using the ruler to make the geese, allows for 4 geese per unit. Again, making the process much quicker than the traditional method.</div>

Did I mention how much I loved the green and yellow with the yarn dye! The RK yarn dye fabrics give such texture to projects.<br />

I'm quite simply in love. In love with Lilly Belle. The aqua~yellow~gray colorway is an absolute favorite, I had no choice but to quilt it up as the latest version of my Walk In The Park pattern.<br />

Bari J, designer of these oh, so wonderful fabrics is now {thankfully} designing for Art Gallery Fabrics. Thus, the fabrics are soft, beautiful and printed on an amazing base cloth.<br />

The collection is a balanced collaboration of large and small scale prints, tone on tones and a spunky little crosshatch, which I promptly used to bind the quilt.<br />

I've finished this little mini quilt for my partner of Round 3 for the<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666;"><b> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/dsquiltsdollquiltswaps/" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666;">DS Mini Quilt Swap</span></a></b></span>. I was a bit hesitant at first with the color palette, but now that it's done and has some Kona Raisin as its binding, I'm liking it! It's on its way to Florida and should be to its recipient tomorrow! Exciting!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKUMFDt7-jEGnzvxY7wO545HkRMYwiLOdyYMA-HauDHoRom2zNqRZ62Zx4X8rZVZZnenNk6m4OKxVaRzw2xyMWi0ITCyh4RBC3UN3_iQCgPSxDJa8X9g1ob_7r3fQMgFpIXOc0hHbPaeCv/s1600/Wonky+Pinwheels+Back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKUMFDt7-jEGnzvxY7wO545HkRMYwiLOdyYMA-HauDHoRom2zNqRZ62Zx4X8rZVZZnenNk6m4OKxVaRzw2xyMWi0ITCyh4RBC3UN3_iQCgPSxDJa8X9g1ob_7r3fQMgFpIXOc0hHbPaeCv/s320/Wonky+Pinwheels+Back.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All print fabrics for the quilt top and back are from Denyse Schmidt, a composite which include pieces from Hope Valley; Picnics and Fairgrounds; and Sugar Creek. The gray background is Manatee by Free Spirit. The project finishes as an 18" square.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQY3tHeZF8j76oigxxmQ4URkj_cgZYlrsV_ZVoi0r3bzburhtHGJ1KwCFQ_ke8Xatey6GzqVGnkBIHcD9h12FBCeSR7rs3gKNW2U044gOqog3odbacWgDverkgvMXHh8V1xo1fIMBRyDHX/s1600/How+It+All+Began.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQY3tHeZF8j76oigxxmQ4URkj_cgZYlrsV_ZVoi0r3bzburhtHGJ1KwCFQ_ke8Xatey6GzqVGnkBIHcD9h12FBCeSR7rs3gKNW2U044gOqog3odbacWgDverkgvMXHh8V1xo1fIMBRyDHX/s320/How+It+All+Began.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In putting this together, I once again took to InDesign to create a paper pieced template. It's available <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/868519/pattern-store" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666;"><b>here</b></span></a> if you'd like to give it a try! The download includes four different variations of the pinwheel block~lending itself to the overall wonky design. To construct the project as shown, you'll need 36 blocks total~or eight sheets of the printed template. Important to remember, the #1 Placement for all four templates needs to be your background fabric. You'll construct the quilt top in six rows of six blocks each. . . easy peasy! This pattern would show well as a pillow too. . .hmmmm maybe that should be next. . .</div>

It's autumn!. . .it already feels like it. The leaves are beginning to fall, my vegetable garden has slowed in production and the swimming pool is chilly. . .and did someone mention football~love it!<br />

The apple trees are beginning to produce, thus homemade applesauce! We stewed our first batch last weekend and filled freshly turned crepes with their sweet cinnamon-y goodness. Delish!!<br />

With the changing of the seasons I'm shifting directions with some of my sewing, tucking away the summer palettes and turning to the warmer hues of Fall. As well as a bit of funky halloween mayhem. These pillowcases feature the Ghastlies. Cassidy loves this line. I paired it with a pale pink Kaufman Radiance and a Yarn Dye in black just for her~coordinates with absolutely NOTHING in her room, but she loves them! The pattern is Pillowcase Pizzazz, BUT this <a href="http://twiddletails.blogspot.com/2010/05/pillowcases-pillowcases.html" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e06666;"><b>tutorial</b></span></a> uses the same method as the pattern.<br />

<br />
Picked up some great flannel at work. Red and Gray Woolies from Maywood Studios. These are without a doubt the BEST flannels on the market. They're thick, soft and hold their color~wash after wash. We've been updating Colby's room to reflect his transition into young adulthood~these will wind their way into a fuzzy-edged throw for him.<br />

And who could pass up Fresh Cut flannel~certainly not me!!! It's beautiful! This bundle of pure bliss will also be a fuzzy-edged quilt. . .for yours truly.<br />

I'm continuing to plug away at Neptune's Granny, I love making these blocks. . .here are two I've made this week. I've finally decided on a layout. . .Saints preserve us! 49 is the magic number. . . not 36. . . not 56 but, 49! There, it's written in stone~no deviating from said plan!<br />
<br />

Swap projects have been whirling around in my head~these are the final swaps I'll be involved with before the holidays so I'm taking extra special care in deciding what to make for my partners. . .more to come as I finish those.<br />
<br />
Enjoy your weekend. Happy Autumn 1st everyone!<br />

Today I'm starting some swap projects! For my DS Quilts swap partner, I've selected a collaborative of Denyse Schmidt fabrics along with a Kona Coal solid. My plan is to do some wonky pinwheel blocks. Because the perimeter edges are bias, I once again took to In Design to create a paper piecing template. I drew four templates just slightly different from one another~giving it just the right amount of wonkiness. I'll leave the paper on until just before joining the blocks, allowing the edges to remain straight, thus a square quilt top!<br />

My Neptune's Granny quilt is one of the long-term projects I have in progress. Here are 16 blocks I've made over the past week, with 3 made just this morning. My original plan was to do a 4x6 block layout with sashing. But. . . .I have enough Neptune and FS Arctic White to go much bigger. . .thus it's destined to be a bed size quilt. I love black and white photography; I often find it an important tool when selecting a fabric palette and with block placement. This photo in particular shows me I need to add blocks with some darker color to that bottom row to achieve a more balanced look.<br />

I had lots planned for the never-ending "To Do" list~it just all scoots by so very fast. Something very exciting~a trip to Sisters, OR for an ENTIRE week with some of the best gals I know. We took classes, drooled over fabric and wool, rode bikes, drank margaritas and enjoyed ourselves immensely.<br />
<br />
As for the sewing, this is what's happening in my sewing room this week. . .<br />
<br />
While at Sisters, I saw this <a href="http://megsmonkeybeans.blogspot.com/2012/05/trajectory-finished.html" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #a64d79;"><b>quilt</b></span></a>, I loved it! I thought it would be great scaled down with blocks small enough to make a pillow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjugNm_JsefpVctxQiZ-IHmKtdas8jlJxF1E_cj2ICM9JUff2g6Iz5lvupuuqrGReeqOVXgNFXQieipwR-Pr-0lyGCg9j4Cpu8a20VF15ibJ_Tf-hJgppbXmcujaxxE0v5hKX-6NjdJl7TC/s1600/Supplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjugNm_JsefpVctxQiZ-IHmKtdas8jlJxF1E_cj2ICM9JUff2g6Iz5lvupuuqrGReeqOVXgNFXQieipwR-Pr-0lyGCg9j4Cpu8a20VF15ibJ_Tf-hJgppbXmcujaxxE0v5hKX-6NjdJl7TC/s320/Supplies.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, I took to InDesign and drew up a 3" finished paper pieced pattern. Choosing fabrics was easy, I knew I wanted to use solids and I had my Michael Miller Cotton Couture QuiltCon bundle warming on the cutting table (I had a 1/2 yard of white fabric to work with). I cut the white, background squares at 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"; the colored solids at 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles and ten setting squares cut at 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". I made 26 trajectory blocks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnUfwfZYT6OzDy6PUXEqGC_I78ZyAkEeCJzcrlBOGFKR-Jmce-07zXzEem7etA7W63rLWf3kJRP3NfeA3CUzya7CxJy6uiQ_Mx4kttMJ5mHCqcrinXL8snAFNf8hN9FtPlMgvVgHCD3q8E/s1600/Trajectory+Ready+for+Quilting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnUfwfZYT6OzDy6PUXEqGC_I78ZyAkEeCJzcrlBOGFKR-Jmce-07zXzEem7etA7W63rLWf3kJRP3NfeA3CUzya7CxJy6uiQ_Mx4kttMJ5mHCqcrinXL8snAFNf8hN9FtPlMgvVgHCD3q8E/s320/Trajectory+Ready+for+Quilting.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Layered with fusible fleece and muslin I quilted a simple crosshatch design~I didn't want to take away from the blocks themselves. . .I just love them!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-1L8QDolA-7wMCkNoYL76clJo9uLqkcwEBVCR_1mhkd0ue4yCgkAMtdZVoT1rRwfagOu0rE_PIsNo2qBzdGnWtjRyTyS3k6uEMgPlO1mjH3SaA-uNk04IvU-XkHEbeCDxPU6PghyphenhyphenWGT4j/s1600/Crosshatched.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-1L8QDolA-7wMCkNoYL76clJo9uLqkcwEBVCR_1mhkd0ue4yCgkAMtdZVoT1rRwfagOu0rE_PIsNo2qBzdGnWtjRyTyS3k6uEMgPlO1mjH3SaA-uNk04IvU-XkHEbeCDxPU6PghyphenhyphenWGT4j/s320/Crosshatched.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

You can see where the setting squares are used. . .<br />

Installed a 14" zipper to the pillow back. Featured fabric is from the La Dee Da line by Erin McMorris. It's a perfect match for the solids of QuiltCon!<br />

BAM! A pillow! It measures as an 18" square. I used a 20" square pillow form to give it a full, plump look. Want to make one for yourself? <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh, how I suck at this blog posting thing! I sew, sew, sew and then neglect to post pics here. So I'll try to redeem myself, and post a bit of what's been going on in the sewing room since March! Because I know you're not all that interested in how EXTREMELY glad I am school is out for the summer! I'm so tired of homework (my kids homework). . .tangent. . .sorry. . .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've participated in a number of swaps this Spring, and it was totally fun! Some of my secret swap partners are overseas and it has been a bucket of sneaky goodness stalking them. . .</div>

I'm trying my hand at tutorials, and I thought I'd put one together for lanyards~quick and easy, also a great gift!<br />
<div>
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682742872646201218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdJ2pipkwtUoK06p4SJtLgIpsY0r5mpNng79rvGEA3gScV61XQAIliaJzc-YVlGFzgkrPkXwUoizFd6DZbZD_SytebfT5R_Mw7fpNSUHtgstUuQI8q2D6youUwDz-rJvmC8xTvgVtfobav/s400/GatherYourSupplies.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 324px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></div>
<div>
Let's jump right in. . .gather your supplies. Fabric and supplies given are enough to make 2 lanyards.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
•8 charm squares (5" x 5" squares)</div>
<div>
•Thread to match fabrics (bobbin thread needs to match your top thread)</div>
<div>
•1/3 yard lightweight fusible stabilizer (I like Pellon 950F)</div>
<div>
•Fabric marking tool (be sure it's water or air soluble)~nothing permanent</div>
<div>
•2 large metal lobster swivel clasps (E50H~42mm x 25mm); I bought mine <a href="http://www.etsy.com/people/twpmango?ref=ls_profile"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #993399;"><b>here</b></span></a>.</div>
<div>
•General sewy/quilty stuff (mat, ruler, rotary cutter, iron, sewing machine)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682745785595671586" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVyzLhbfp7OtLd-Ptor818122KU0ucILyyRyH-_3p2lLkcp7t4igz-6f2M9VAF0-fhvD2yrqgMt9b76DE0QdvBJTlHgn121MGfOrsKNhRcrZuJ9GFQ0dAz2dRmJ0XLUxhqMtr_W3_tyVZ8/s400/Cut1.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 285px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" />Stack the 8 charm squares one atop the next~nice and even. With your rotary cutter slice at the 2 1/2" mark.<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682745792122439154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcRGga5Tmw7IDOjpmmAwuFosPWftGiNe1cdtSqE93TFl5LgGOSDXAKuNazyNGkT4W4RuFFjBHGbCIA8J-egO-iWn9AmICFYBDv6pjVnF6O48DLXblw2Ev-oVVYwhFo_QNEVxu7yjZG5RmY/s400/Cut2.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 268px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" />Now you have 2 stacks of rectangles 2 1/2" x 5". Set one group aside.<br />

<div>
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682747549935102322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvCF3nXJYHmlvzHw8ikeAk1u5MXCCJUv9qXizmBNoPgyq3tJPyjR7r6q_7EQQKfbpPgNLmoafoO_xqECuH3qdW34wL6eNNMOtBEIHgjwNUKgTNOcxuLHmrfirvQWNaTRNyO69a5xToTO7e/s400/PressSeamsOpen.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 334px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /><br />

Have I been sewing. . .yes, but being energized to photograph my projects and progress is yet another story and a blog post without pictures is, at the very least, boring. What I have been completely taken with these past few months has been our home, more specifically our property. Northern California received one of the wettest winter and spring we've had in nearly a decade. We've also had a fairly mild summer, with temperatures just this week reaching over the century mark. It's been the most beautiful transformation, and our property is lush and green. I take my camera and walk the property, I want to remember always, how it is to me right now. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZgK6L5OKxuvVR2R3iyNG6AL4IYNeiM_J6RpmX5C3c7DlZaHtrp3pOKFds_GFmVtXe1ldbk4sQNVsYF8BxN9tTbX75V9CYW545blebQHQbKY2auYRJ4SSPnhe_2U2Zwz3ggk0eMyZjVEBG/s400/yellow.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651318914239843474" />The hibiscus have multiple blooms in rich, vibrant colors. I love to watch them close in the evenings just as the sun peeks over the mountains into the Pacific.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyYLBLtLGdEM91zy90RMrjEv9nefvuYjzGGyuP6wVcbQELEW426X_SrZJ8LtWk-MTYOLhwRiRO96f-7w_UOCX1QdjGa0Dp0bC5NJECAzLHiSWQiXhgbcY6TqzguOl7gqCl8815ZMLtc81C/s400/tekee.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651318909475226786" />My husband loves the tropical feel of Florida; he brought home several tiki's from there on a recent trip. They add such character.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaXYKH06Y3ZQPayMs768HW7FZvWpu12X4hEmGmEn4rC96MlnIq3DZChZCJyWCu8bKdNrFoyXccUTl77fLyICigo8ePocCfDalaKshcjttQo3XSHONXS2c3D3PaLAb2YcV7dYbnW_jiD6az/s400/rose.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651318908026515554" />Even the roses have embraced the cooler summer days with blooms the size of dishes. The goal is to complete two blocks each week for a total of 111 blocks. I'm armed with some of my favorite tools. And I've also decided to join the 21st century, and have downloaded the book to my Ipad (my very first!). The book itself is based on a contest held in the 1920's whereas wives of farmers submitted short essays as to why or why not they'd want their daughters to also become a farmer's wife. I can't decide which I like better, these anecdotal stories of 1920's farm wives or the blocks themselves. I know the frustrations I feel somedays being a modern day farmer's wife~the cattle get loose, a leak in the watering system, the neighbors horses eating your fruit trees etc., I can only imagine what it must have been like without a tractor, or running water and electricity in the barn~eek! But, I do enjoy the fresh eggs, knowing where our meat comes from and canning and preserving fruits and vegetables to enjoy throughout the winter. This project seems to be the perfect parallel for me at the moment.<br /><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPo9uR4mjukASsmQvsvMRlgdr6RXa31mk8HUseFIQV28fknOUwjHB8KTeqoJplAox-jFZHLvVfadOqnUR21CSmO4oOxbPwyYPVPb16P0SMfEg4cf4MR5bVinNNxrdDwVRlCSjwBmFw4SzC/s400/IMG_5072.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618448884484513426" />I've sorted through my scraps and stash and picked out a few of my VERY favorite fabrics to use. I've been dying to use the newspaper print in blue forever, and it seems like a good choice for a background fabric.</div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 306px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDjkBxlUdj5gILbY04AMOQHnLEF-PtiynxC8E48vlR-gu3hhP68776veagp58ji5UsUacg7qolGD3L8fnBTN9IqYRS9G6wu8e-JZHelNaB_jhzFbiB-bb29sLLInDFbJgRaq4sJMHMvbeV/s400/IMG_5069.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618448875497635218" />Week 3 is currently underway, here are my blocks from weeks one and two.</div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhduc_x7CxlqSNiA7FNoHLtzCYbUpByZP8SR_iFA4yV9HH-6l8pFTubRIXK0fxXRHaVp5LxXbZDmJ_Eo-08od9u5Wy0GRTJP1vYsq6JbjVUWRyK5mORZvIFEy2Kz6B-RtwpFu7xmR1FxDgI/s1600/IMG_5073.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhduc_x7CxlqSNiA7FNoHLtzCYbUpByZP8SR_iFA4yV9HH-6l8pFTubRIXK0fxXRHaVp5LxXbZDmJ_Eo-08od9u5Wy0GRTJP1vYsq6JbjVUWRyK5mORZvIFEy2Kz6B-RtwpFu7xmR1FxDgI/s400/IMG_5073.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618448896711215202" /></a><div style="text-align: left;">Here are the fabrics I've picked for block #5. We've had a wonderful winter here in northern California~lots of rain and snow; because of this, the scenary is beautiful. Cassidy (daughter #2) and I strolled the property this past weekend and here is what we saw.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBUXLgbtCDXY5mbTP7N1qFIwt_ABT0hzyib45m-y-ElYSCt_2aCgs3075TBIrK5iNlp46dpbUwheS0XjIKAKSJD4RIW7J73e3F4I8obGFQHNHQUNUTykZO1HiNUb_EbMZ-yBi6UoicGYTz/s400/Fruit+Tree+Blooms.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577299959189060354" />Fruit trees in bloom. In nearly 20 years we've learned what trees do well here and those that do not. The do-nots include apples. With 110° summer days, our poor little apple trees just didn't do well. So, about a month ago we tore them out and planted 10 new cherry and peach trees. This brings our little fruit orchard to nearly 50 trees, with some additional room for planting.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 375px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVg43aGYvAwomFkNaQzCQBMOYveIJyhWkRLWZOd6eQJ1w8FOJOcGHGJy3FhaC7AcC7hOPpCjOUsFl34Oyep5iSwe1Dy0psueYE3ZelBZ1DNdIVbpp-0B5f4ouZv_y0swrui7qaZtP_aX_K/s400/Busy+Bee.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577299945991845202" />Given a few sunshiny days the trees have begun to blossom, and the bees have gotten busy. Not necessarily a good thing in February, we're sure to have frost-laden mornings and more rain before the trees have leafed out. Cross your fingers!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 331px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgSZEEx8mJ7BPWyZ1aT7USYPGjfwEZ9v42vI3fubKEMEWAPeWDVG966_ydAguZE2Kr01tWhq7b9yfCzDOmmfW6v8s3HkQ-FXngmjPuFOJDZGac_CEAek_IGFp4mF_EiwdUL3XavSUy1khL/s400/Plants+Bloom.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577301287325193266" />Even our flowering bushes are feeling a bit of spring fever.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd4CCn_5YDLtkYyOOK2fsccAx8EFI3myJRIiYopf-urAGqwGRA4jPPIYYrOMH4MOr0N6JokBzSNqAgtFyAZKsvpFwf3D_IT0KLLRX9y6WJ8CZl-tlvOOPZM4BfM74K4PD93zTCC1eJGjj4/s400/Hydrangea+Peekaboo.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577301279617686562" />The hydrangea, a bit more cautious, peek out to greet the warm sunshine. When we purchased it we were told it had once been part of a river which carried run off from the twin peaks of Mt. Lassen. It's dry in the summer, but in the Winter and Spring we have this beautiful waterway. The kids find tadpoles and other little creatures. It also becomes a sanctuary to visiting friends.</div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 269px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX7bbVhHT-jPO3djN8BuDb87YETE_940Tq1RXiGyo63cXWn4TaX4tHGL6znIuloFHkvUlx_zaFj4a1Dt3FvzqZnRrEuoRzRmgMWMjJ9KVWbqhnbRZwL2Vpybwssbyr_8g9_P8-ftrKkuFU/s400/Love+Birds.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577301282348118370" /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Each year mallards visit to mate and hatch their young. So far this year, we only have this one pair. We usually have more. There's plenty of food, and we don't let the cows graze near the creek bed until after the ducks have moved on. The grass grows long and provides a nesting ground for the mallards, pheasants and Canadian geese. We, well actually, I don't allow hunting on our property, much to my son and his friends dislike. My husband just smiles.</span><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjij3uAG2CCv9TZZuSMM8RSIMBQ04k1u46IIBAjdbwfpzBRIpUAZcLccc28S-p7jw4_qBBSVpmbtq03g03YfEsARV0HZ2x7wCJeCrvIvLLTCYenGGEZnnFoPETOZ1Spe-jFkb1Wqg5VbUye/s400/Herron.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577301263381912722" />We also have several Herron visit. Some are white, like this big guy others are more blue. They eat small jack rabbits which also seem to like it here. This particular Herron did NOT like his picture being taken, we stalked him a bit, and managed to make him angry. He'll be back.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 278px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh37aKsiOnJX7104hIuMZoooAx2rAfE6AvZNFe044jukWQUdkChTJ3CdNvXRwJdGiTaXgtgUUJOwmePbe0VK5e0vdkgpNtdk0euSMUT-zIlRjeyNAjD4RDAFBDFcY3NRBljXVYaazvjc0-o/s400/High+End+Foot+Wear.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577301270847857570" /><div style="text-align: left;">Always wanted to know what the fashionable farm divas sport for footwear. . .this is it! This picture was taken over the pool house. Snow down to the valley floor is the prediction (we are about 100 feet above sea level); I can count on one hand how many times it's snowed here in my life time, so you can imagine the excitement. For the kids you'd think they'd moved Disneyland to the backyard. For me, I'm on my way to bring in more firewood and maybe a bit of sewing. . . </div><br /><div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /></div></div>Dorriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06499716888423693189noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3794357010436307029.post-23326841529124346402011-01-30T19:52:00.001-08:002011-01-30T20:28:05.902-08:00A Few Things. . .<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggD6p87Xesm1VkDGj4K0EOjULbSDh_R-Mu41I1KQX614RtwGHPsKuHhBVxNmAp0C-JlStwEzI6BMUDNvl99fg-gveX3T_sqCnoOFi4_fVkbCv_6IsRnTeRpCuS9t8WGx3ZXdi0K32-4Z8Y/s1600/IMG_3641.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggD6p87Xesm1VkDGj4K0EOjULbSDh_R-Mu41I1KQX614RtwGHPsKuHhBVxNmAp0C-JlStwEzI6BMUDNvl99fg-gveX3T_sqCnoOFi4_fVkbCv_6IsRnTeRpCuS9t8WGx3ZXdi0K32-4Z8Y/s400/IMG_3641.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568194010275008258" /></a>With January on it's way out, I felt I had some unfinished projects hanging over my head. I had this quilt machine quilted months ago and then it just sat. I vowed to put the binding on before February. The pattern is easy to follow and well written~and it's reversible! We have a great button selection at the shop so I chose these big metal buttons. I love the idea of having a special little cozy to have my breakfast or snack on. I received one as part of a swap I participated in, and I keep it next to my sewing machine for my water to sit on. . . so classy! I hope all of you enjoyed a happy holiday season. I love having the kids home, holiday music and all the special food associated with Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I'm just as happy to have it be all wrapped up for another year. Today is the first sunshine of the year~yahoo! I literally stood on our front deck and soaked up the sun. It's a chilly 51°, but still there's sunshine! I look forward to spring, the field grass grows tall and green, the mallards hatch their eggs and we have ducklings, the fruit trees blossom in pink and white; and there's an overall feeling of rebirth; the first sunny day of Winter always reminds of Spring.<div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioittZqGLh9FMWzxJ72PYhRImlZUMRD1H-nOQLrQE_bb5ZLUEakvzg6FagfBveKSETfTW18ag8ddPihDWudHcBDeMfiwqBu-h-HI3nffIrGcJZB7Rtcs1QlaFSI5n7EWIc_Tq4Xzoios0u/s1600/IMG_3821.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 323px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioittZqGLh9FMWzxJ72PYhRImlZUMRD1H-nOQLrQE_bb5ZLUEakvzg6FagfBveKSETfTW18ag8ddPihDWudHcBDeMfiwqBu-h-HI3nffIrGcJZB7Rtcs1QlaFSI5n7EWIc_Tq4Xzoios0u/s400/IMG_3821.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560356187956310866" /></a>I've been sewing a bit. Once I quilt and bind it, it'll be a shop sample for the binding class I'm teaching in February.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcmsG1Phyphenhyphennqvkjfz9iOuBOLd_BtzQYOWL_lksJh0919Ef8eNQJGgfc-b7zlm0ivDfH6vKm9iE6oeLfipV7eYPBOYI2Yy51ozAstk3ERiX3T-dAfx4NROcVebljR4y4AAuECqZKxMZN4IlY/s1600/IMG_3832.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 265px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcmsG1Phyphenhyphennqvkjfz9iOuBOLd_BtzQYOWL_lksJh0919Ef8eNQJGgfc-b7zlm0ivDfH6vKm9iE6oeLfipV7eYPBOYI2Yy51ozAstk3ERiX3T-dAfx4NROcVebljR4y4AAuECqZKxMZN4IlY/s400/IMG_3832.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5560356176323555026" /></a>I've been on a bit of a bag kick lately. This is the latest. Ordered the Echino print and Olive Swing Bag pattern from <a href="http://www.pinkchalkstudio.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6666;"><b>Pink Chalk Studios</b></span></a>. I love the bright, fresh print. Honey Run had this nifty button and my favorite Kaffe Fassett shot cotton for the lining. Is it too early to start thinking Spring?</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm off to start dinner, fold one more load of laundry and check backpacks for school. I was looking for a pattern which I could incorporate some of the wonderful wools we have at HRQ. This patterns seemed to accommodate that desire. I chose a cotton for the body of the bag; wool for the band and a dupioni silk in mist for the lining.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 360px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwV2RK04vjQ7EWT-2zjuvEjhkvJnz9R0NIZ4xeDGr4MYkDI_N-3uLmgwMdm7lP78Wq01vT8bFwxDkZrRDpbRHl6BAWF9WiaCmbgwhvuiakgv216JnYa6hKwAEGpQAo6MusqTNImF3u4KWu/s400/IMG_3721.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549850782438727138" /></div><div>The pattern itself is well written and has detailed diagrams.</div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2VJqYIu44KT_oY69zoKUsu65Q162nDkEwIMcVYLOy1GUF99EMOLqS42XibsY6teezrHyofBwgfPnYMqyGZv1Qg_ll1D32LxUfoOF5mK1tVaNy1_0yUANq-Uf8_zYW3Qj9rsBFmDJ5N2rL/s400/IMG_3723.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549850787864072818" /></div><div> And I *love* her non-buttonhole technique! I do believe I enjoy these little swaps even more than the VQB's I'm in. It's so much fun teasing your unknowing partner. Along with the string quilt I posted earlier, I also tried my hand at embroidery hoop art. The doodle stitching was fun, I had a hard time getting past the raw edge issue at first, but I think it came out quite cute! Also, included will be some thread and a FQ pack of Joel Dewberry's Modern Meadow fabrics.<div><br /></div><div>I hope she'll enjoy!</div>Dorriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06499716888423693189noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3794357010436307029.post-77643726248374202022010-11-29T06:24:00.001-08:002010-11-29T06:31:23.507-08:00A New Fondness. . .<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgElWytcejA-f0b3FA3-wuZqT0GhnSbHXyiKU_vvOk0oqYredhW3BR2TPcSlC4eiRGl23XwC_BZPK5pALShaoDYZeh7zX3usojqD2L86u-2dqW95XrXHNul3q8W_BEbXIOoe4gU2qxXGHqO/s1600/IMG_3704.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 326px; height: 360px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgElWytcejA-f0b3FA3-wuZqT0GhnSbHXyiKU_vvOk0oqYredhW3BR2TPcSlC4eiRGl23XwC_BZPK5pALShaoDYZeh7zX3usojqD2L86u-2dqW95XrXHNul3q8W_BEbXIOoe4gU2qxXGHqO/s400/IMG_3704.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544977498875283650" /></a>This is my latest "mini" quilt. I'm part of this round's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/modernswappers/"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6666;">Modern Swappers</span></b></a> group, and this is the project I came up with. My partner has modeled her sewing room in orange, purple and gray. Initially, I was a bit hesitant; but, I definitely have a new fondness for this color combination. It reminds of sweet grape and orange popsicles on a warm summer day. With the exception of the gray, this was stitched up with strips leftover from several larger projects. I did a square spiral quilting to emphasis the strips. Wouldn't a full size quilt in this colorway be fun!<div><br /></div><div>Hope you all had a lovely holiday!</div>Dorriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06499716888423693189noreply@blogger.com3
